Processes/Control Elements/Support Infrastructure explained

The purpose of almost all organisations is to produce products that are valued by customers. Products are produced by a series of process steps, which transform the incoming material into outputs. The process is therefore the core of an organisation's operation, as can be seen in the figure below.

Processes – How do you get the incoming raw material and information that you need? Once it has been obtained by your organisation, how is it processed? How is it digested to produce your products? How do you deliver these? These are all elements of the main or core processes of an organisation.

Control Elements – How do you receive orders? How are they integrated? How do you control the supply of raw material and information? How do you monitor progress of an order? How do you check progress against budgets and forecasts? Who uses the monitoring information you have, and in what way. These questions all point to the control elements of your organisation and how they provide direction and focus for the operation of the main process.

Support Infrastructure – Where is your organisation's information stored and how do people get access to it? What is in place to help the processing and controlling of the information you have? Do you have the right computer hardware and software? Does the way the organisation handles information keep it safe? Infrastructure services enable the processes and control activities to function effectively.
